The handle has a dark patina, the guard has a few small dings from use, but not too bad. S inspector mark on lower portion of the guard. The handle is about 6 1/2 long. The blade is about 32" long, and 7/8" wide, gray patina with dark spotting, about the same on both sides. Very small amount of pitting at the tip.

S 1863 stamped on ricasso, the other side is stamped with the Roby circle stamp, double stamped. The scabbard is a Roby replacement scabbard.

Thillmann's book on Army Swords page 215 states Roby scabbards were leather with brass mounts, but many were replaced with more durable iron scabbards. Emerson & Silver made all of their scabbards iron, but the placement of the screws on the mounts is different, the last picture shows the screw placement on the E&S mount. The drag on the scabbard is bent and straightened up small cracks one on each side, but still holding firm, you can see that the sword was in the scabbard when it was bent, leaving a indentation on the drag, the mounts have a dark patina. The sword fits all the way into the scabbard, also the blade is tight in the handle.
